FLOWERS OF MAY

FLOWERS OF MAY

may is the month of awakening, when gardens stop doing the rehearsals and stage the actual show.

It is the season of explosive blooms, stunning scents and exuberant colours.

Lily of the valley

Lily of the valley, Convallaria majalis or Lillium convallium, is a member of the Liliaceae family, a plant native to Europe and North America. It is a truly unique and refined plant with two large, oval, long, green leaves, but also abundant with small, drooping bell-shaped flowers that typically bloom in March and have a truly captivating scent. The meaning of this unique flower is truly important, as lily of the valley is synonymous with purity and happiness.

It is the quintessential lucky flower.

Although prized for its elegant appearance and distinctive aroma, lily of the valley is highly toxic: all its parts contain cardiotoxic glycosides, substances dangerous to humans and animals if ingested.

Peony

The peony, in both its tree and herbaceous forms, truly vies with the rose for the title of the most beautiful of flowers.

It is true that it blooms only once a year and for a fairly short period: from mid-late April to mid-late May.

Peonies are perennial plants belonging to the Paeoniaceae family, and can be herbaceous or shrubby. They bloom in spring: peony flowers are large and range in color from white to pink, deep red, and even yellow in some less common varieties. They can be single, semi-double, or double, with petals arranged to form dense, showy blooms.

Paeonia lactiflora is one of the most widely cultivated ornamental species, prized for its flowers, while Paeonia suffruticosa, native to China, is known as the tree peony and can also be grown in colder climates.

To keep your peony bouquet fresh and lush for up to 7-10 days, clean the vase with soap and water, cut the stems diagonally by 2-3 cm, and remove all leaves below the water level. Change the water regularly and keep the flowers away from heat and direct light.
